When my daughter turned 15, we threw her a Quinceanera party to celebrate her womanhood. At first, she didn’t want to have one at all. Her friends were teasing her that it was her “coming out” party. I have clear childhood memory – of a man coming to our school when I was only eight years old to talk about investments for children. He showed us what saving just five dollars or pounds a week could do for us from that point until we were adults. The amount of money made from interest was astounding, and had I been smart, I would have started such a program once I was earning my own money. I made the mistake of thinking I had plenty of time. Is there a special teacher who maybe has taught several of your children? I remember attending a School Board Meeting where a long term dynamic teacher in our School District was presenting… he started off by pointing at each board member and mentioning his (or her) child or children, when the child (or children) had been in his class (many were currently past college) and special memories about them. Wow! What an impact. What was more, he followed them through their academics since he knew them! FYI, he taught elementary, but he could tell you what happened in their high school years!

Anyhow, now imagine such a person was going into retirement… would you want to make that send off something super special? Sure you would! Now, if that teacher had a special hobby or interest, a perfect gift might be a tour of a place that he (or she) might want to visit… if they knew it was possible.

My niece was born with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, a rare congenital disorder that causes multiple joint contractures and is characterized by muscle weakness and fibrosis. In other words, her arms and legs, hands and feet curve and are disjointed. I was devastated right along with my brother and his wife when they got the news and saw their newborn for the first time. For the next several months, everyone told them that God had a plan so they shouldn’t be upset or worry. None of us believed it, and we started hating anyone who even said those words, mentioned God in a sentence, or wore Christian apparel! It was pretty bad. Then someone sent me the article, “Loved in Spite of Afflictions.” I ignored it for weeks, but when I did read it, I finally understood a few things about why this beautiful baby girl was born the way she was. No, it wasn’t God’s fault, but I’m pretty sure God can use her in mighty ways.

My wife and I were going to have a baby, and I didn’t want my son born only to take him home to our single bedroom apartment. We had been saving for a house for years, so we had quite a bit saved. With the baby on the way, we wanted a floor plan that would fit our needs, and a house built before the baby was born in four months. It seemed impossible. Then I read the article, “Modern Modular Home Construction” and was really impressed with the whole process. After quite a bit more research, I ended up convincing my wife to build a modular home in California. We were able to buy a custom built home that was perfect for our family, and the whole process was finished before the baby came. What a great system!
