Grandmother would say that we’re a nation of worriers as she’d make comparisons of how much stronger women were of her generation. She often thinks that we have little discipline with the kids, and they in turn have little respect for their parents. It’s all about mollycoddling and education these days she thinks, and the very joy of living has been sucked right out of us by gadgets and greed. When the granddaughter tells her that she is thinking about taking out some kind of Pregnancy Health Insurance just in case anything goes wrong with the pregnancy, she may hear stories of how her aging grandmother would give birth on the Monday and be back in the fields picking peas for a living the very next day. “It never did us any harm” she’d say, but to be fair there are good points raised about parenting of all generations, and what we need to do is take the best bits of them all and mould them into a new discipline for raising families in the twenty first century.

In 1902 President Theodore Roosevelt was in Mississippi to settle a border dispute between Louisiana and Mississippi. While there he went on a hunting trip. Members of the hunting party tied a small, black bear cub to a tree for him to shoot. Seeing how helpless the small bear was, he refused.

The next day, cartoonist Clifford Berryman drew a cartoon depicting Roosevelt refusing to shoot the bear. This prompted shopkeeper Morris Michtom to ask his wife Rose to make him a teddy bear, which he placed in his shop window. Morris Michtom contacted the President asking his permission to name the stuffed bear, Teddy. The president agreed and the Teddy Bear was born.

When William Holmes McGuffey’s READERS debuted in 1836, one-room schoolhouses contained all eight grades, and students progressed at their individual rates. Therefore, it is important to remember that the Fourth Reader does not mean “a reader for the fourth grade.” In fact, many reading authorities today say that some of the selections found in this volume are equivalent to reading material presented in today’s high school and college classrooms.

In the preface to the 1838 edition, McGuffey addressed the question of reading level. He stated that the student of the Fourth Reader “is to expect that higher claims will be made upon his power of thought.” In his 1853 preface, he said if any lessons are found “unintelligible” to the young readers, they will not be those lessons of the “highest character for thought.” He explains: “Nothing is so difficult to be understood as nonsense. Nothing is so clear and easy to comprehend as the simplicity of wisdom.”

When the McGuffey READERS were first published, eclectic was a fashionable word in the field of education. Then, as now, competing educational philosophies claimed superiority for their own methods and goals. by using the term eclectic in a title, an author or publisher was suggesting that he had gleaned the best from every available philosophy or method. Winthrop B. Smith and Company, one of McGuffey’s early publishers, advertised an entire ECLECTIC EDUCATIONAL SERIES including grammar, arithmetic and algebra, as well as the McGuffey READERS.

William McGuffey’s use of the word eclectic carried a double significance. Besides meaning “built on the best features of all educational philosophies,” it also meant that his literary selections were the best pieces taken from many sources.

That Wm. McGuffey’s readers have done more than their share of building American character and literacy is generally conceded. Yet it is also widely held that some of their stories are out of step with the times, such as those which suggest that Indians are savages, or that a little boy was “gay” (i.e. joyful), or that God doesn’t love little boys who are naughty. Many ecologically-minded citizens are also unhappy with the stories that describe whaling escapades; blood foaming on the billows, etc.

The Moore Editions. These McGuffey Readers omit such stories from the original (1836) versions and substitute more acceptable accounts from the 1838, 1843, and 1853 editions. But the Moore editors went beyond these changes to offer better word lists, questions which require more thought, and — particularly in Reader IV — bright, updated introductory remarks to great pieces of literature. When I was a kid, the most simple illusions could sometimes seem like amazing magic tricks. I would see a card trick where a magician did some sort of elaborate divination to discover which card you had picked, not realizing that he already knew it. I would completely fall for the illusion, hook line and sinker.

My magic beginnings
When I was in my late teens, I started to learn some magic tricks online. It wasn’t that I wanted to be a magician or anything, but I did think that knowing a few tricks would help me to understand the magic of illusions that fascinated me so much. In my late teens, I had a great cigarette trick that entertained my friends. I could easily make a cigarette disappear, then reappear behind someone’s ear. It was an easy trick to do. All it was was a bit of misdirection and sleight-of-hand – the fundamental illusions that all magicians use. Nonetheless, my friends thought it was an amazing magic trick.

Party tricks
I learned some similar amazing magic tricks with coins which I do to show off the parties from time to time, but I never got much further than that. I had seen so many stage magicians in my life that I felt like it would take a lot of talent to really stick out – talent that I wasn’t sure I had. For me, the magic was gone.

Taking it to the next level
Then I saw something that changed my perception. I was exposed to a magician doing so-called mental magic. He was guessing the numbers people were thinking of, convincing people that he was a psychic, and performing all other sorts of mental illusions. Some of them were quite uncanny. I really couldn’t tell how he knew what was in people’s heads unless he had plants in the audience. When I saw what he was doing, I knew that I had to learn the new skills myself.

A few years I ago bought and moved into a small maisonette that I later rented out. When I first moved in, this home was in desperate need of a little TLC on the home improvements front.  It was literally riddled with mildew and the mildew spores where evident in the air throughout the entire building. Everything had to go or be treated. Carpets were ripped up and dumped, most curtains were slung out apart from one quality pair which was cleaned professionally and treated accordingly. As a mother or 4 young kids I was dismayed to hear a neighbour telling me that the area in which we live will mean we have limitations on Which Californian High School our kids will be able to attend. She went on to explain that this is what’s commonly known as the catchment area. The school we had set our hearts on is actually nearer to us than some of the other schools we would be allowed to apply for, yet for some reason it is not in our catchment area. And to think we uprooted and moved the entire family on ignorance. It’s enough to make a parent break down and cry. This news has also placed a strain on the relationship with my husband whom I nagged into moving for the sake of the children’s education. He left everything up to me and now he’s livid with what has happened. However, I hope to put a case forward to the school of our choice based on the grounds of innocence and misguided information with a little ignorance thrown in for good measure. All I know right now is that my mental health and wellbeing is in tatters as a result of this massive error! Perhaps if I’d have learnt how to use a computer, I could have done more up to date and comprehensive research online, but then hindsight is a wonderful thing right!

Simran was distraught. Her newborn daughter�s beautiful face suddenly broke out into a rash that resembled acne. Acne? Whoever heard of a newborn baby developing acne? That surely wasn�t possible� or was it?

Hormones

More than 30 percent of babies are born with, or more commonly, develop a rash soon after birth. There are various types of rashes, baby acne being one form. This form of acne usually begins when a baby is around 3 weeks, and can last until the baby is 4 or 6 months old. Baby acne is perfectly normal, and is caused by hormones passed to the baby, through the placenta, before birth. These hormones stimulate the oil glands on your baby�s skin, leading to baby acne. In addition to acne, the hormones may also cause your newborn son or daughter to have tiny breasts. These breast buds are in no way permanent, and all soon disappear with time. Sometimes newborn girls may have some vaginal bleeding, similar to a period. This is also due to hormones passed on to the girl, and is not a cause for concern. The bleeding will stop soon enough, and will not recur until your daughter is an adolescent.

Irritation

Often, the baby�s skin breaks out into pimples, and while most of the acne is in the form of red rash, whiteheads are also common. While the acne will be most visible on the face, a few pimples may appear on the chest and arms as well. If your child is agitated for some reason, heated up or unwell, the rash may become more severe, causing you further anxiety. Similarly, if his skin is irritated, the rash will worsen. Take care not to wash your child�s towels or bibs in harsh detergents, as these may irritate the skin if not carefully and completely washed off. Make it a point to gently clean out saliva or milk from his face, so they do not cause further irritation.

Oils

Clean his face with water gently, and use a mild baby soap to wash his face. There is no need to rush around looking for a cure. Baby rash disappears on its own, with time, so applying oils and medications will not help, and are in any case, not required. In fact, applying oils will almost definitely cause the acne to worsen.

Allergy

Make sure this is indeed acne, and the rash is not just because your baby is allergic to something. If you feel your child may have an allergy, keep a lookout for any possible allergens, and keep them away from your baby.

Winter Care

If your baby has acne, how do you look after her skin in the winter? Always remember, use less moisutriser and stay away from heavy creams. Use light, non-scented lotions. Also, make sure you do not over-bundle your child. Your baby will show her discomfort if she is too cold, but will not, if she is too warm. As a result, your child�s skin will break out into a heat rash (yes, heat rash is surprisingly common in the winter too) worsening her acne. So if you take your baby outdoors in the winter, cover her up well, but make sure you remove some of the layers when you bring your child indoors.

And finally, there is no reason to believe that just because your child has had baby acne, she will be susceptible to teenage acne. At times, the babies with the severest acne have grown up to develop flawless skin.
