Pregnancy Heartburn
There are many wonderful things that happen when you are expecting a child. Your heart swells in anticipation, you feel your baby kick for the first time, and you gain a few pounds knowing it is for a very good reason. However, there are also some more annoying things that happen during pregnancy that can cause more than a minor irritation. One of those things is pregnancy heartburn. It starts out as an occasional but relatively minor annoyance, but can then grow into something extremely painful for some women.
Some women do not experience pregnancy heartburn, but most do to some extent. The changes in the body can cause it at first, meaning your stomach may be more delicate than it use to be and you have more pregnancy heartburn than you would have regular heartburn for foods you are use to eating all of the time. If you find that foods are starting to bother you, giving you nausea and heartburn, tweak your menu for foods that your body finds more agreeable while you are pregnant. You may also want to avoid those foods while breastfeeding as well.
Pregnancy heartburn can get worse as you go through the second and on into the third trimesters of pregnancy. This is because the baby is growing and there is less space inside of you. Your organs are shifting a bit, and things are getting cramped. Your stomach may be squeezed a bit, or forced to move up. This will cause all types of problems with pregnancy heartburn. The muscle between the stomach and the esophagus may not work as well due to odd position, allowing the acids from your stomach to go up to your throat, causing you pain.
What can you do about pregnancy heartburn? First you can modify your diet. This is not going to solve the problem if you have bad heartburn, but it can offer you some relief. The foods that typically cause stomach pain in pregnancy heartburn are the ones that trigger acid production. You can also eat smaller but more frequent meals. This can also help keep foods and acids in the stomach where you want them to stay. This offers some relief, but may not do the trick towards the end of your pregnancy.
In other cases, you are going to need more help with pregnancy heartburn. You may need to take some over the counter antacids, but you should make sure the choice you make is a safe one. Talk to your doctor about the type of pain you are having with your pregnancy heartburn, along with the amount of time each day you spend feeling pain from heartburn. Allow them to tell you what is safe to take and what you should avoid, and then make your choice form the list of acceptable remedies for heartburn. You may still have occasional pain, but it should be much better. Your attacks may happen less often and the severity should be much, much easier to handle.
