The Moore McGuffey Readers – Fourth Reader

When William Holmes McGuffey’s READERS debuted in 1836, one-room schoolhouses contained all eight grades, and students progressed at their individual rates. Therefore, it is important to remember that the Fourth Reader does not mean “a reader for the fourth grade.” In fact, many reading authorities today say that some of the selections found in this volume are equivalent to reading material presented in today’s high school and college classrooms.

In the preface to the 1838 edition, McGuffey addressed the question of reading level. He stated that the student of the Fourth Reader “is to expect that higher claims will be made upon his power of thought.” In his 1853 preface, he said if any lessons are found “unintelligible” to the young readers, they will not be those lessons of the “highest character for thought.” He explains: “Nothing is so difficult to be understood as nonsense. Nothing is so clear and easy to comprehend as the simplicity of wisdom.”

The Moore McGuffey Readers – Third Reader

When the McGuffey READERS were first published, eclectic was a fashionable word in the field of education. Then, as now, competing educational philosophies claimed superiority for their own methods and goals. by using the term eclectic in a title, an author or publisher was suggesting that he had gleaned the best from every available philosophy or method. Winthrop B. Smith and Company, one of McGuffey’s early publishers, advertised an entire ECLECTIC EDUCATIONAL SERIES including grammar, arithmetic and algebra, as well as the McGuffey READERS.

William McGuffey’s use of the word eclectic carried a double significance. Besides meaning “built on the best features of all educational philosophies,” it also meant that his literary selections were the best pieces taken from many sources.

In the THIRD READER McGuffey continues his emphasis on lessons designed to build character. Although this present THIRD READER contains few lessons that are completely lectures on behavior, nearly all the adventure stories, historical reports, Biblical excerpts, nature articles and poetry include instruction and admonition to encourage a child in personal piety, social responsibility, patriotism and industriousness. The Moore McGuffey Readers – Second Reader

The stories in this Second Reader of the Moore-McGuffey Eclectic Reader series have been drawn from the original McGuffey Readers, the books that taught generations of students to read and think. The stories within this edition emphasize the same values stressed in the first edition — piety, obedience, concern for others, diligence and moral behavior.

The main character of each story is always someone with whom the young student can identify; each story contains activity readily understood by young minds. Perhaps quaint by today’s standards, the McGuffey Reader stories comprising this Second Reader are true to their original counterparts, including phrasing and expressions, environments, relationships and knowledge. The Moore-McGuffey Readers: First Reader

That Wm. McGuffey’s readers have done more than their share of building American character and literacy is generally conceded. Yet it is also widely held that some of their stories are out of step with the times, such as those which suggest that Indians are savages, or that a little boy was “gay” (i.e. joyful), or that God doesn’t love little boys who are naughty. Many ecologically-minded citizens are also unhappy with the stories that describe whaling escapades; blood foaming on the billows, etc.

The Moore Editions. These McGuffey Readers omit such stories from the original (1836) versions and substitute more acceptable accounts from the 1838, 1843, and 1853 editions. But the Moore editors went beyond these changes to offer better word lists, questions which require more thought, and — particularly in Reader IV — bright, updated introductory remarks to great pieces of literature. Added to these changes are original paintings in color for the first two books and a strong cloth binding, and you have a superior set of readers. The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook: A Book Review

Throughout history, societies have depended on books to guide them through life. Many of these have been referred to as ‘handbooks’ and have been instrumental in a number of ways by helping us ‘find our way’. Today, there is a handbook that is designed to guide us through the world in which we live that can greatly improve our lives in the process. That handbook is called “The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook”.

Written by homeschooling pioneers Raymond and Dorothy Moore “The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook” is more than just advocating educating children at home; it is a treasure trove of information covering all aspects of the family and, by default, society itself. They have compiled a handbook for the ages that will enable society to greatly benefit from what it has to offer.

First and foremost, “The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook” is a book written to help the parent guide their children through the jungle that is the educational system. Each chapter provides those guiding principles in a simple, small bites approach. Be at ease though; it is not a book that solely advocates removing the child from mainstream schools and teaching them at home. It more accurately addresses the need for parents to ensure their child’s education, whether it is in the home or the traditional public school setting.

Minding Your Own Business: A Book Review

I don’t know about you, but there have been too many times to count that I have experienced a ‘little month at the end of the paycheck’ and I don’t like it. Ultimately, I have only myself to blame but, if I could do it over, I would liked to have benefited by learning how to better manage my money. Since it is the way it is, the next best thing to do (while learning to dig myself out of this hole I have dug) is teach my children that there is a better way to manage money than by ‘charging it’. The book “Minding Your Own Business” by Raymond and Dorothy Moore is an excellent resource to help in this area; not only when it comes to finances, but in learning to manage all aspects of life as well.

Home Style Teaching: A Book Review

Within education today, there are two prevailing thoughts when considering the best approach for educating children. Those positions are taken on one side by the teachers and on the other side by the parents. From the teacher’s standpoint, they believe that their level of expertise places them in the position of knowing what is best for the student. On the other hand, parents increasingly demand a greater say in deciding what curriculum is deemed worthy of being presented to their children.

Increasingly, it has become apparent there needs to be alternatives to each position. Into the middle of this situation come Raymond and Dorothy Moore, known around the world within the academic field as authorities regarding childhood development. They have taken up the cause of the parent’s right to determine what is best for their children. As a result, we find an excellent book that addresses both viewpoints titled “Home Style Teaching”.

Home Style Teaching” is more than just another book written as to what is best for the child from the parental point of view. It also explains the reasoning of the teachers, understanding why they are so passionate about their profession when it comes to the education of the child. “Home Style Teaching” was written with both teachers and parents in mind as it aims to quench the differences between the two camps and focus on the positives each side has to offer.

Home Grown Kids: A Book Review

From the standpoint that the educational system has it exactly backwards when it allows developmentally challenged children to stay home, yet demands by law that “normal” children receive a public education outside the home, “Home Grown Kids” shows why it is just as vitally important to have the option to teach all children at home, regardless of learning comprehension or capability.

“Home Grown Kids” is a wonderful source of encouragement that will give you needed ‘push back’ to the ‘powers that be’ in order to more intelligently determine your child’s destiny as it pertains to his or her education. Honestly, who better to direct the course of a child’s future than the parent? With “Home Grown Kids” that is exactly what you will receive in order to make an informed decision.

Better Late Than Early – A Book Review

Have you ever heard the phrase ‘children are better seen than heard’ before? The fact is, when it comes to children, many societies saw them more for their labor value than what they could contribute to better their society by means of an education. There were those that felt otherwise and began lobbying to educate those children, first within the one room schoolhouse ‘one size fits all’ mentality and later within age appropriate grade levels.

Even at this stage of the educational mindset, it was realized that not all children could learn at the same rate or speed as their peers; so, the advent of private education began to address a child’s special needs. Even so, many children were left behind, either because of the cost factor or simply due to proximity to these private schools. So, many if not most children remained within the cookie cutter style that is the public school system.

Better Late Than Early” by Raymond and Dorothy Moore is a book whose time has come. The Moore’s position, through much research and documentation, has been that the child is being forced into the educational system much too early. Through many years of research and nearly 29 pages of references “Better Late Than Early” presents a compelling reason why you should wait before jumping on the ‘the earlier the better’ bandwagon when it comes to educating your child. It is their contention that a child’s cognitive skills don’t develop until the age of eight or nine; therefore it is a waste of time to attempt educating them until those cognitive skills have fully developed.
