It’s important for students of all ages to be familiar with the Bill of Rights because it’s such a fundamental institution that applies to life as an American citizen.

Indeed, we never seem to stop learning about the Bill of Rights as we repeatedly encounter it in history classes at school and controversial issues discussed by the media. Issues about freedom of speech, freedom of religion, due process, civil trial, power of the people and such all come back to the Bill of Rights, which represents the basics of the civil rights of Americans.

It seems that children grow up fast these days particularly when it comes to learning how to use twenty-first century gadgets. Recently my five year granddaughter has gotten very interested in taking photographs using my digital slr camera. She does a fantastic job and understands many of the functions but I was so concerned about her damaging my pride and joy that I began to research the childrens digital camera market.

Well that opened my eyes!

What I discovered was that these cameras are really only suitable for toddlers. Kids cameras are built to withstand a lot of abuse, they are big and colourful and very appealing to youngsters. What they are not good at is taking really good photographs. Now don’t get me wrong here. I guess I am approaching it from the point of view of what my needs are not the childs. Provided that the camera does a half reasonable job of taking a snap that can look okay when printed or on a computer screen then that’s enough. And many of the kids digital cameras on the market do the job fairly well so long as you manage your own adult expectations.

What I did find however was a big discrepancy in performance from one children’s digital camera maker to another. As always you get what you pay for so don’t expect a lot from a kids camera that cost only $20. Try to aim at the middle to high end, they go as up to $150 or so. Watch out for resolution too, you need to find a digital camera around the two or three mega pixel mark, don’t even bother with anything less.

So what about my five year old granddaughter? Well for me it was a no-brainer. I think that had she been a lot younger I would have taken a punt at a Fisher-Price or Vtech but at five I think that children are already way to savvy. I went for a Canon Powershot 480 which you can find for around $100 or so. The camera produces fantastic quality and my granddaughter took no time at all to become completely familiar with it.

My final advice is this. Buy a toddler one of the many childrens digital cameras on the marketfor sure but give a proper digital camera to a five year old.

If you have a small child that loves to cook, it may be time to send them off at a Culinary Arts Program for Kids. There are hundreds of them across the country. They will spend their time learning about food preparation, combining flavors, and making their own tasty dishes. If you want to start them off at home, here are two simple recipes that even little kids can make with a little parental supervision.

- Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are kid favorites, but how often do you let them put this concoction together themselves? Let them use a butter knife (the round-tipped variety) to dig in to the peanut butter jar and spread it on the bread. Give them a spoon for the jelly – showing them that separate utensils are used for each ingredient – and let them create the sandwich. Believe me, they’ll enjoy eating it more than usual.

- Toddlers love smoothies! You prepare the fruits requiring a knife, such as strawberries. Let them wash the fruit under running water in a colander. Let them mash up a banana in a bowl. Let them measure out juice or yogurt. Then, let the child pour it all into the blender cup. You fasten the lid, place it on the blender. They press the blender button. This most satisfying of recipes for toddlers becomes magic, performed by their own hands. Measure ice cream scoops and milk for a milkshake, or ice cream for a root beer float, letting them pour the root beer.

In 1902 President Theodore Roosevelt was in Mississippi to settle a border dispute between Louisiana and Mississippi. While there he went on a hunting trip. Members of the hunting party tied a small, black bear cub to a tree for him to shoot. Seeing how helpless the small bear was, he refused.

The next day, cartoonist Clifford Berryman drew a cartoon depicting Roosevelt refusing to shoot the bear. This prompted shopkeeper Morris Michtom to ask his wife Rose to make him a teddy bear, which he placed in his shop window. Morris Michtom contacted the President asking his permission to name the stuffed bear, Teddy. The president agreed and the Teddy Bear was born.

When William Holmes McGuffey’s READERS debuted in 1836, one-room schoolhouses contained all eight grades, and students progressed at their individual rates. Therefore, it is important to remember that the Fourth Reader does not mean “a reader for the fourth grade.” In fact, many reading authorities today say that some of the selections found in this volume are equivalent to reading material presented in today’s high school and college classrooms.

In the preface to the 1838 edition, McGuffey addressed the question of reading level. He stated that the student of the Fourth Reader “is to expect that higher claims will be made upon his power of thought.” In his 1853 preface, he said if any lessons are found “unintelligible” to the young readers, they will not be those lessons of the “highest character for thought.” He explains: “Nothing is so difficult to be understood as nonsense. Nothing is so clear and easy to comprehend as the simplicity of wisdom.”

When the McGuffey READERS were first published, eclectic was a fashionable word in the field of education. Then, as now, competing educational philosophies claimed superiority for their own methods and goals. by using the term eclectic in a title, an author or publisher was suggesting that he had gleaned the best from every available philosophy or method. Winthrop B. Smith and Company, one of McGuffey’s early publishers, advertised an entire ECLECTIC EDUCATIONAL SERIES including grammar, arithmetic and algebra, as well as the McGuffey READERS.

William McGuffey’s use of the word eclectic carried a double significance. Besides meaning “built on the best features of all educational philosophies,” it also meant that his literary selections were the best pieces taken from many sources.

In the THIRD READER McGuffey continues his emphasis on lessons designed to build character. Although this present THIRD READER contains few lessons that are completely lectures on behavior, nearly all the adventure stories, historical reports, Biblical excerpts, nature articles and poetry include instruction and admonition to encourage a child in personal piety, social responsibility, patriotism and industriousness. That Wm. McGuffey’s readers have done more than their share of building American character and literacy is generally conceded. Yet it is also widely held that some of their stories are out of step with the times, such as those which suggest that Indians are savages, or that a little boy was “gay” (i.e. joyful), or that God doesn’t love little boys who are naughty. Many ecologically-minded citizens are also unhappy with the stories that describe whaling escapades; blood foaming on the billows, etc.

The Moore Editions. These McGuffey Readers omit such stories from the original (1836) versions and substitute more acceptable accounts from the 1838, 1843, and 1853 editions. But the Moore editors went beyond these changes to offer better word lists, questions which require more thought, and — particularly in Reader IV — bright, updated introductory remarks to great pieces of literature. Added to these changes are original paintings in color for the first two books and a strong cloth binding, and you have a superior set of readers. As a mother or 4 young kids I was dismayed to hear a neighbour telling me that the area in which we live will mean we have limitations on Which Californian High School our kids will be able to attend. She went on to explain that this is what’s commonly known as the catchment area. The school we had set our hearts on is actually nearer to us than some of the other schools we would be allowed to apply for, yet for some reason it is not in our catchment area. And to think we uprooted and moved the entire family on ignorance. It’s enough to make a parent break down and cry. This news has also placed a strain on the relationship with my husband whom I nagged into moving for the sake of the children’s education. He left everything up to me and now he’s livid with what has happened. However, I hope to put a case forward to the school of our choice based on the grounds of innocence and misguided information with a little ignorance thrown in for good measure. All I know right now is that my mental health and wellbeing is in tatters as a result of this massive error! Perhaps if I’d have learnt how to use a computer, I could have done more up to date and comprehensive research online, but then hindsight is a wonderful thing right!

If you ever walk into a kindergarten class that has a large set of old fashioned wooden building blocks, you will almost always see them being played with. Why? Why are these simple classic blocks so universally loved by kids? Perhaps it has to do with the open-ended nature of playing with blocks. There is no “right” or “wrong” way for a child to stack them. They will unknowingly learn what works best through trial and error, all while developing skills like reasoning, basic math concepts, hand-eye coordination, and even social skills while playing with others. It’s fun to watch your child build a tall tower, knock it down, and then rebuild it better than before. You are actually watching your child learn through active play. How many toys can you say that about?

The best blocks are made from hard maple and follow the Caroline Pratt “Standard Unit Block” principle where the blocks are all scaled to mathematically relate to each other so that each block is a multiple or fraction of every other block. These large blocks are most likely the same ones you played with as a kid. Many of the block sets out there today are made up of small pieces that don’t stack very well. I have found that kids get frustrated very quickly when they can’t build what they want with these small blocks, and then move on to another activity.

Kids building blocks are a great gift to give your child, and will last for generations. Make sure you buy a quality set made from unfinished hard maple and are large enough to stack up tall. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to find these quality blocks in stores these days, so your best bet will be to shop online.
