When your child’s feeling sad, angry or depressed, communicate openly, honestly and patiently with them. Listen to them without judging or criticizing. They may not fully understand why they feel the way they do, so the opportunity to communicate with you about it may be what’s needed to help them sort through a difficult situation. Suggest positive behaviors and options as solutions, and make sure to leave that door of communication open so they know the next time they feel badly, they can come to you for help and know that you won’t judge or punish them for how they’re feeling.

Start helping your child build positive self esteem and self value, then you should show them your positive sense of self and strong self esteem. Do things like attending a rally for the tea party movement. Be positive when you speak about yourself and highlight your strengths. This will teach your child that it’s okay to share their talents, skills and abilities.

It is really fun seeing babies in costumes as they come to the door. I know I certaily love seeing them. I just know that some of these will be baby bunting costumes and some of these will be little bug buntings. I can’t wait to see all the little ones come come to my door this Halloween.

I tend to go all out for Halloween, because it is my daughter’s favorite holiday. She definitely takes after me, because it was also my favorite holiday when I was growing up. I want to make sure that she celebrates it safely.

With everything going on these days, I just don’t feel it is as safe for my children as it was when I was trick or treating back in . . . well let’s just say it was a long time ago.

So now to save a lot of trouble and time, I buy my kids costumes online. Then to make sure they are safe, I throw a big Halloween party for all of the kids on the block at our house every year.

My daughter has decided this year that she wants a Star Wars Princess costume.

She saw one on a website online, and she immediately knew that was the costume that she wanted. Her little friend saw the Star Wars child costume for Queen Amidala costume and just went wild!

Now I know my children are safe, but they are still having the times of their lives having a costume party with all of their friends and seeing all of the different costumes that everyone is wearing.

My husband has never liked to dress up for Halloween, but I finally talked him into it this year. He agreed to do it as long as I do not have him dressing up like a punk rocker.

I found a great little shop online that sells Avatar costumes, and I decided that it would be a great look for him.

I was shocked when he told me that he actually liked the costume. I hope that this is going to be something that he agrees to start doing every year, because it would definitely be a blast. The funny thing is, I found a really great avatar costume for me too! (see the one to the left!) Now we’re going to match, and we’re looking forward to our party together.

Of course the kids have no problem picking costumes, and when it comes to Avatar costumes, my son really liked the Jake Sully child costume.

If your husband is hesitant to go o a costume party, try to think of his favorite movie, TV show or other interest. I bet there’s a costume that would fit perfectly with whatever his interests are.

Who is Diego, you ask? Is it possible that you don’t know Diego of Nickelodeon’s smash hit, Go, Diego, Go!? Diego Marquez is an 8-year-old Latino and he is Dora the Explorer’s older cousin. Diego shares a love and passion, like his parents, for animals and nature. He is very energetic and athletic and will respond to any animal distress calls at the Animal Rescue Centre. With help from his high-tech gadgets and vehicles, and of course, viewers at home, he is always geared up and ready to head to the rainforest to rescue his animal friends. Diego has an 11-year-old sister, Alicia, and she works alongside Diego and their parents at the Animal Rescue Centre. Alicia is described as being a computer whiz, and she receives the animal rescue calls and communicates them to Diego via their video watches.

Diego never heads off to the field without his reliable bag, Rescue Pack. With one word, “iActivate!”, Rescue Pack can transform into anything Diego might need, for instance, a jet pack, a bike, or even a boat! On occasions when Diego has difficulty locating an animal in trouble, he will turn to a device called Click. Click is a telescopic camera that can zoom through the dense forest, and with help from the viewers, tries to match a sound to an animal. Once the animal is located, Diego is quick to provide aide, along with Baby Jaguar at his side. Baby Jaguar is very special to Diego, and even though he is a very young cub, he loves to explore and go on adventures with Diego. Some of Diego and Baby Jaguar’s animal friends assist them on their missions, like Tuga the sea turtle & Linda the Llama. Along the way, though, the Bobo Brothers, a pair of spider monkeys who are always up to no good, always seem to disrupt the peace in the forest. These troublesome monkeys, although they never mean to cause trouble for Diego, will set traps, cause mudslides, and break dams. The only way to stop them is to shout, “Freeze Bobos!”.

Did you know that Diego and his familia (family) have been helping to protect animals and preserve their environment since September 6, 2005, when the show first aired on Nickelodeon? That means the show will celebrate its 5th Anniversary this September 2010! That also means that Halloween is just around the corner. Can elephants fly? Well, if you’re Dumbo you can! This Disney icon, almost 70 years old, is an emblem of wish fulfillment and the spunky American Dream. Against all odds, taunted and teased, with roadblocks on every path, Dumbo yet succeeds. It’s all about the classic rags to riches story, the underdog whose dreams literally soar.

Bill Tytla was the main animator for Dumbo, and based the animal’s child-like expressions from his two-year old son, Peter. As the mother of two little girls, I know first-hand the honesty of expressions and emotion. Everything they do is real, from the heart, and with no insincerity.

Watching Dumbo for the first time in years, I notice that the little elephant’s expressions are the exact same as I’ve seen in my kids – hope, joy, sadness, the sense of wonder when exploring new things. This is definitely the mark of a true artist. I almost feel that Disney was the same way, back then – the company, though their movies, seemed just as childlike, full of wonder as they charted new ground with animation and story techniques.

Children mimic these characters (I know I did!) and will often have a tickle trunk with some of their favorite toddler animal costumes. I remember receiving a Dumbo elephant costume after watching the movie for the first time and pretending I could fly with big ears!

In the movie, Dumbo doesn’t realize he is the object of ridicule and laughter, though he quickly realizes something is amiss. When his mother is ripped away from him, he is left alone, mistreated and with no “warm trunk” to curl up to. All he has is a mouse to help him through. Taking a leap of faith (and a magic feather), he realizes he can fly, and his source of embarassment, his ears, turn him into a majestic star.

As an adult, we often lose sight of our dreams as a child, or inadvertedly stiffle them our own children with our own cynisism of the world. Disney may not be the childlike business it once was, but they do understand how children see the world, and how the American Dream works – it often starts as a tragedy a kid can not quite understand – the loss of a parent, poverty, bullying and ridicule. But through hard work, perserverience and a little bit of magic (like a feather), anybody, elephant or human, can rise to overcome all.

As your children get older, they are going to find new interests, some of which you know nothing about and really could not care to learn about either. If they are asking you hundreds of questions about things and you do not know how to answer, you may want to find others that they can chat with to satisfy their curiosity. Children often latch on to something and obsess about it for a while. Don’t worry – this passes for the most part as they get older, but for a while, you may feel you are going crazy. If you want to find someone for them to talk to, look around for safe chat for kids options they can use.

Lastly, make sure that you keep an eye on chats even as they get much older. They will not protest when they are young and you are sitting with them in chat for kids. However, when they are teenagers, they are going to be insisting on your trust and that you give them some privacy. You can do that by laying down some ground rules about where and when chatting is allowed. You can still insist they chat online in a common room of the house and that you can peek over their shoulder on occasion. St Elizabeth’s one of the Westville Primary Schools is a beautiful school offering everything for your child to learn and have fun. St. Lizzies offers an after care facility until 17h00 daily, as well as extra mural activities such as gymnastics, ballet, judo, arts and crafts and playball. Often you hear of “Teacher Directed Time” well during these times the child participates in group activities together with children of a similar age. Who would of thought that a whole new industry has emerged from party accessories? Gone are the days if you had a child’s birthday party and send a little handwritten invite out to their friends inviting them over to celebrate your birthday. That seems so old hat now! What about running into your local shop and buy up a plastic plain tablecloth a few plastic mugs, plates and cakes bags. And basically all that was left to arrange was the gift for pass the parcel and of course the birthday cake that would take pride of place in the centre of the table.

When I was in Queensland Australia I was lucky enough to see the beautiful Ulysses Butterfly. This butterfly has the most intensive electric blue colour on the top of the wings. You can only see this when the wings are open. When the wings are closed, you can only see shades of black and brown – this is so the butterfly can blend into the forest.
