My children are bothering me to get a pet for a moment now, but it’s not the proper time to get pets like a dog or a cat at home now, it is too much of a problem. Between full-time jobs, college, sports teams, homework, and taking part in with mates, there would not be sufficient hours within the day to dedicate to coaching, caring for, and spending time with a new puppy or kitten. Still, I do suppose every child ought to have some type of pet in his or her life due to the nice classes to be discovered from such an experience. Consider this when purchasing guinea pig supplies: a water dish is perfectly acceptable for a dog or a cat-but highly inadvisable for a guinea pig for at least two reasons. 1) Cavies tend to knock dishes or bowls over quite frequently and 2) they tend to defecate often and they tend to defecate everywhere. (Yes, even in their food and water dishes.) Because of this, when selecting guinea pig supplies, you would be well-advised to avoid water dishes or water bowls and to instead outfit your cage with a top quality water bottle.

We recommend paper bedding. Cavies tend to be susceptible to respiratory problems, so bedding materials such as clay litter or pine shavings (bedding materials with high dust levels) are to be strictly avoided. Also, certain woods such as cedar contain relatively large amounts of tree oils. They should also be avoided because tree oils are generally not good for your pet’s health. Paper bedding (often made from recycled newspapers) is highly recommended as it suffers from none of these issues.

It is possible in the pet store you will find leashes or harness that claim to be guinea pig safe. Please do not use these as your pet can be injured when struggling against the leash. Many people buy leashes with the intention of using them to allow a guinea pig to play safely outdoors. Instead consider building a partially enclosed outdoor area.

High Quality Foods – Timothy hay, fresh vegetables, fruits and a good quality of Timothy pellet food. (Stay away from pellet foods that have wheat, soy, alfalfa or beets as the top ingredients.) Use only pellets that are formulated for guinea pigs. Pelleted food that is labeled for use with small animals will lack the proper nutrients that are essential for your guinea pigs. Do not forget the treats. Guinea pigs love treats, so don’t forget them. (Most treats given to these pets are different fruits and veggies. So always keep some on hand.)

Although a bowl is not suitable for offering water to your pigs, it is still a handy item to have. It is a good idea to put a small, heavy dish or bowl directly under the end of the sipper tube to catch excess water. If you watch your guinea pigs drink from their water bottle, you will observe that they do not gently lick the ball bearing end of the sipper tube. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. They aggressively attack the sipper tube. They chew on it. They shake it. They chomp, munch and crunch away at it until their thirst is quenched-all the while splashing, slopping and drooling excess water out of the lower side of their mouth because, as I said earlier: cavies can be such what? Right! Pigs.

When shopping for guinea pig supplies, be sure to select a top quality water bottle to reduce the probability of leaking. Yes, water bottles do leak occasionally. But if you find a wet area forming beneath your water bottle, suspect your guinea pigs’ drinking technique first. As I mentioned earlier, a bowl placed underneath the sipper is the solution. But make sure the bowl is heavy and sturdy as your pigs will most likely stand on it to drink.

I’ve just put up a new article on my blog talking about the benefits of taking your family to the local shelter or pound when you decide to adopt a puppy.

When you decide to adopt a puppy from a shelter, the whole family can feel good about it.

Mixed breed puppies are typically more stable in temperament, easier to train and housebreak and are as loyal and loving as a dog can be. Like Tramp from Disney’s ‘Lady and the Tramp’, they’re not encumbered with genetic flaws that might make them a less than perfect pet.
