The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook: A Book Review

Throughout history, societies have depended on books to guide them through life. Many of these have been referred to as ‘handbooks’ and have been instrumental in a number of ways by helping us ‘find our way’. Today, there is a handbook that is designed to guide us through the world in which we live that can greatly improve our lives in the process. That handbook is called “The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook”.

Written by homeschooling pioneers Raymond and Dorothy Moore “The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook” is more than just advocating educating children at home; it is a treasure trove of information covering all aspects of the family and, by default, society itself. They have compiled a handbook for the ages that will enable society to greatly benefit from what it has to offer.

First and foremost, “The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook” is a book written to help the parent guide their children through the jungle that is the educational system. Each chapter provides those guiding principles in a simple, small bites approach. Be at ease though; it is not a book that solely advocates removing the child from mainstream schools and teaching them at home. It more accurately addresses the need for parents to ensure their child’s education, whether it is in the home or the traditional public school setting.

School Can Wait: A Book Review

As so many parents anguish over their child’s first day at school, there are many reasons why this is. Everything from concern for their safety to how they will interact with all the new faces, parents everywhere rightfully care about their child and his or her’s ‘brave new world’. But, the main concern usually revolves around whether their child is ready academically. Into that realm of reality comes a timely book titled “School Can Wait” by Raymond and Dorothy Moore.

As a more ‘scholarly’ follow up to their book “Better Late Than Early”, Raymond and Dorothy Moore’s book “School Can Wait II” represents ten years worth of research packed into “just” 300 pages. To back up their position regarding when to begin educating children, they have added 37 pages of references at the back of the book. Be assured that “School Can Wait” will challenge you at times due to its extensive in-depth writings. No matter, this book is much more than a high brow resource for the academically inclined.

Home Style Teaching: A Book Review

Within education today, there are two prevailing thoughts when considering the best approach for educating children. Those positions are taken on one side by the teachers and on the other side by the parents. From the teacher’s standpoint, they believe that their level of expertise places them in the position of knowing what is best for the student. On the other hand, parents increasingly demand a greater say in deciding what curriculum is deemed worthy of being presented to their children.

Increasingly, it has become apparent there needs to be alternatives to each position. Into the middle of this situation come Raymond and Dorothy Moore, known around the world within the academic field as authorities regarding childhood development. They have taken up the cause of the parent’s right to determine what is best for their children. As a result, we find an excellent book that addresses both viewpoints titled “Home Style Teaching”.

Home Style Teaching” is more than just another book written as to what is best for the child from the parental point of view. It also explains the reasoning of the teachers, understanding why they are so passionate about their profession when it comes to the education of the child. “Home Style Teaching” was written with both teachers and parents in mind as it aims to quench the differences between the two camps and focus on the positives each side has to offer.

Home-spun Schools: A Book Review

Home-spun Schools” offers two much needed areas of information for any parent considering homeschooling their child: the testimony of the parents themselves to encourage you that you can also home school and, the legality to teach at home so you will know the laws as it pertains to homeschooling in your state.

Every walk of life is represented in “Home-spun Schools” to give you the encouragement needed when considering the option of homeschooling. There are entries from bankers, builders, dentists and nurses, as well as teachers and single parents.

In addition, in chapter 13 titled “How To Deal With The Law” you will find a common sense approach to determine what your legal rights are as a parent when it comes to home schooling your child. There are test cases referenced, as well as a wide range of information to ensure you are standing on legal ground.

Home Grown Kids: A Book Review

From the standpoint that the educational system has it exactly backwards when it allows developmentally challenged children to stay home, yet demands by law that “normal” children receive a public education outside the home, “Home Grown Kids” shows why it is just as vitally important to have the option to teach all children at home, regardless of learning comprehension or capability.

“Home Grown Kids” is a wonderful source of encouragement that will give you needed ‘push back’ to the ‘powers that be’ in order to more intelligently determine your child’s destiny as it pertains to his or her education. Honestly, who better to direct the course of a child’s future than the parent? With “Home Grown Kids” that is exactly what you will receive in order to make an informed decision.

Better Late Than Early – A Book Review

Have you ever heard the phrase ‘children are better seen than heard’ before? The fact is, when it comes to children, many societies saw them more for their labor value than what they could contribute to better their society by means of an education. There were those that felt otherwise and began lobbying to educate those children, first within the one room schoolhouse ‘one size fits all’ mentality and later within age appropriate grade levels.

Even at this stage of the educational mindset, it was realized that not all children could learn at the same rate or speed as their peers; so, the advent of private education began to address a child’s special needs. Even so, many children were left behind, either because of the cost factor or simply due to proximity to these private schools. So, many if not most children remained within the cookie cutter style that is the public school system.

Better Late Than Early” by Raymond and Dorothy Moore is a book whose time has come. The Moore’s position, through much research and documentation, has been that the child is being forced into the educational system much too early. Through many years of research and nearly 29 pages of references “Better Late Than Early” presents a compelling reason why you should wait before jumping on the ‘the earlier the better’ bandwagon when it comes to educating your child. It is their contention that a child’s cognitive skills don’t develop until the age of eight or nine; therefore it is a waste of time to attempt educating them until those cognitive skills have fully developed.

Going Green for Christmas

My daughter has been trying to convince us to “go green” for a long time. She has always been an environmentally friendly child. When she was little, she was absolutely convinced that we needed to buy artificial Christmas trees instead of cutting down trees every Christmas. I tried to tell her that the trees on Christmas Tree lots are already dead, but she said I was ruining the environment by supporting those who would cut down trees in the first place. She was only 10 years old. Now, after reading articles like “A Christmas Decision That is Good for Everyone,” I guess she was right. She was always a very bright girl.

Thank You Gifts And Online Ideas

It is not a new discovery, but the technological use of the internet to find gift ideas for thank you gifts is still very popular today. Online searches for ideas is more frequently being discovered as an astronomically easy method of shopping for birthday, anniversary, corporate or wedding gifts. Although amazing that some people are just now discovering the full power and technology of the internet, it continues to evolve even for the daily users. Given the ease of which technology allows us to shop and buy thank you gifts online without leaving our home, it is incredible that more people do not use this powerful shopping tool.

Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities

Many would say that no one cares about Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities, so long as it’s not them.  But do we really live in a careless society with such selfish attitudes towards our fellows? No, of course we don’t!  Although there will always be some who don’t care about those with learning disorders, the fact is that there are more trained professionals and more resources for children and adults with a history of poor achievement than at any time ever. Educators in the past you to blame uneducated folks as people who were lazy or just didn’t try hard enough, but they were not really to blame, b because back then they believed that to be true.  In today’s world, we know there are certain people who just need a little extra coaxing and care to bring them up to scratch with their fellows.

Public School Ranking Tips

Ever since we made the choice to have a child, public school ranking has become a crucial factor in our life. As parents, our kid’s education is one thing we have to pay attention to. All public schools are different. A safe area for our children to grow up and a fine school that is going to offer a great education is what is essential to us.

Fortunately for us, all of this valuable information is at our fingertips. Our national public school systems are ranked every year. Things that play a part are; where the school is located, how prosperous is the town, the crime rate, the state’s budget toward education, and how many students attend the school. I believe school ranking can be very useful.

You may want to find the best school in your area. Do a routine national public school ranking on Internet, and see what you can find.

Online Education Information And Tips

One of the options these days for the serious student is online learning. I wish I could have had that luck when I was in college.

A lot of people have found online colleges to be the main solution for continuing education. The class schedules are surely more flexible and many times the tuition is more affordable because there are not as many (if any) physical campuses that have to be maintained. If you are good at time management and setting your own schedules then an online degree could be the perfect solution.

Youth Group and Clothing

For years, our youth group has worn the typical youth group clothing. We buy t-shirts with our youth group logo on them and usually a Bible verse. Over the years, we’ve had every conceivable color and style. Recently, though, I noticed that none of the kids were wearing their t-shirts outside of youth group. They just weren’t cool enough to wear in public I guess, no matter how “cool” or “solid” or “real” we made them. So, I started thinking about that and trying to come up with something different. Then, I read the article “The Easy Way to Get Beautiful Feet” and had a great idea. Christian footwear! Now, the whole youth group has a pair of Christian shoes in their own individual styles, sizes, and colors. They love them and wear them everywhere.

Printing Family Projects

I read this article the other day called, “Making Your Own Business Cards – The Basics.” It talked all about how the modern day business card came to be and what sort of things I’d need to design my own. So, I went out the next day, purchased some specialty business card stock, and made cards for my wife’s new cleaning business. She loved them. That project led me to other projects, all done on the computer. For instance, the other day I purchased some certificate paper and made a “Best Daughter Award” for my oldest who had just made the honor roll. I also made family stationery for next year’s Christmas card. I can’t wait to see what other projects need to be done.

Teacher Retirement Gift Tour!

Is there a special teacher who maybe has taught several of your children? I remember attending a School Board Meeting where a long term dynamic teacher in our School District was presenting… he started off by pointing at each board member and mentioning his (or her) child or children, when the child (or children) had been in his class (many were currently past college) and special memories about them. Wow! What an impact. What was more, he followed them through their academics since he knew them! FYI, he taught elementary, but he could tell you what happened in their high school years!

Anyhow, now imagine such a person was going into retirement… would you want to make that send off something super special? Sure you would! Now, if that teacher had a special hobby or interest, a perfect gift might be a tour of a place that he (or she) might want to visit… if they knew it was possible.

Learning Effective Strategies For Teachers

Being a good teacher means much more than just repeating facts and telling children to read things. Each teacher should have effective teaching strategies to impart information to children in such a way that the children can absorb and remember that information. It sounds easy when put like that, but sadly, life is never easy. Out of a class of say 30 children, one teaching strategy may only work for half of them! Teachers in schools are under pressure of course and whilst they do their best to manage a whole class, having children of different abilities and aptitudes in the same class makes applying wholesale teaching strategies very difficult.
