Many would say that no one cares about Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities, so long as it’s not them.  But do we really live in a careless society with such selfish attitudes towards our fellows? No, of course we don’t!  Although there will always be some who don’t care about those with learning disorders, the fact is that there are more trained professionals and more resources for children and adults with a history of poor achievement than at any time ever. Educators in the past you to blame uneducated folks as people who were lazy or just didn’t try hard enough, but they were not really to blame, b because back then they believed that to be true.  In today’s world, we know there are certain people who just need a little extra coaxing and care to bring them up to scratch with their fellows.

Whether you are a parent, a teacher, or both, good communication is crucial for the success of your children in the school system. In a town without a good parent teacher organization, there is often a hostile relationship that develops between parents and teachers. Teachers try to carry on with teaching without listening to parent recommendations. Parents try to get the education they want for their children without listening to the teacher’s explanations of why they try a particular approach. Everyone ends up unhappy, and the result is often worse for the children.

Ever since we made the choice to have a child, public school ranking has become a crucial factor in our life. As parents, our kid’s education is one thing we have to pay attention to. All public schools are different. A safe area for our children to grow up and a fine school that is going to offer a great education is what is essential to us.

One of the options these days for the serious student is online learning. I wish I could have had that luck when I was in college. 

A lot of people have found online colleges to be the main solution for continuing education. The class schedules are surely more flexible and many times the tuition is more affordable because there are not as many (if any) physical campuses that have to be maintained. If you are good at time management and setting your own schedules then an online degree could be the perfect solution.

For years, our youth group has worn the typical youth group clothing. We buy t-shirts with our youth group logo on them and usually a Bible verse. Over the years, we’ve had every conceivable color and style. Recently, though, I noticed that none of the kids were wearing their t-shirts outside of youth group. They just weren’t cool enough to wear in public I guess, no matter how “cool” or “solid” or “real” we made them. So, I started thinking about that and trying to come up with something different. Then, I read the article “The Easy Way to Get Beautiful Feet” and had a great idea. Christian footwear! Now, the whole youth group has a pair of Christian shoes in their own individual styles, sizes, and colors. They love them and wear them everywhere.

I read this article the other day called, “Making Your Own Business Cards – The Basics.” It talked all about how the modern day business card came to be and what sort of things I’d need to design my own. So, I went out the next day, purchased some specialty business card stock, and made cards for my wife’s new cleaning business. She loved them. That project led me to other projects, all done on the computer. For instance, the other day I purchased some certificate paper and made a “Best Daughter Award” for my oldest who had just made the honor roll. I also made family stationery for next year’s Christmas card. I can’t wait to see what other projects need to be done.

How to Get Your Child to Love Reading was conceived when author Esmé Raji Codell was staring at a shriveled potato that was sprouting eyes. She wondered, ” . . . if I had a potato, nothing but a potato, how could I teach a classroom full of children? Well, I could cut a potato in half. (I can use the paring knife from my own kitchen, right?) We could review fractions. With one half, I could cut a design and do potato prints. We could plant the eyes from the other half of the potato (it can have eyes, right?) and grow more potatoes, charting their growth.” The ideas cascade: writing a story about a potato, making a book of potato recipes or potato poems, making potato stamps of all the letters, teaching reading, getting books from the library about potatoes, talking about the Irish potato famine, writing letters to executives about potato chips or Mr. Potato Head.

Is there a special teacher who maybe has taught several of your children? I remember attending a School Board Meeting where a long term dynamic teacher in our School District was presenting… he started off by pointing at each board member and mentioning his (or her) child or children, when the child (or children) had been in his class (many were currently past college) and special memories about them. Wow! What an impact. What was more, he followed them through their academics since he knew them! FYI, he taught elementary, but he could tell you what happened in their high school years!

Anyhow, now imagine such a person was going into retirement… would you want to make that send off something super special? Sure you would! Now, if that teacher had a special hobby or interest, a perfect gift might be a tour of a place that he (or she) might want to visit… if they knew it was possible.

Being a good teacher means much more than just repeating facts and telling children to read things. Each teacher should have effective teaching strategies to impart information to children in such a way that the children can absorb and remember that information. It sounds easy when put like that, but sadly, life is never easy. Out of a class of say 30 children, one teaching strategy may only work for half of them! Teachers in schools are under pressure of course and whilst they do their best to manage a whole class, having children of different abilities and aptitudes in the same class makes applying wholesale teaching strategies very difficult.

For this study tip, before you begin on your work, make sure that your space to study is clean and well organized. Get all of your materials together that you’ll need for all your subjects. This includes everything from pencils to flashcards, if you’re studying for a test. Look over your homework and prioritize. If a subject will take a long time, or if it’s one that’s really hard for you, then do it first. This is rule two. If you delay working on it you’ll never get it done because you’ll drag out your easier homework, to avoid doing it. Rule three is simple. Read the chapter highlights, so you’ll understand the main ideas of the information, or the key points.

Remember that rule four is important, too. The earlier you start on working on your assignment the sooner you can get to bed. Medical studies have found that the later it gets in the night, the less you’ll be able to concentrate and study affectively. It’ll take you twice as long if you get started later, than it would be if you worked during the daylight hours, or very early evening. The body’s natural hormones for sleep kick in the later it is. Don’t think that pumping caffeine into your body will help because you’ll crash a lot sooner than you would, if you had only followed a routine for studying.

Ok, how many people have post-it notes on their computer? There are probably fair amounts of people who have at least one if not more around their computer or desks. Here’s another question: Do those post-it notes make their way into other parts of your life? Are they on the dashboard of your car or tucked inside a study notebook?
