Girl Guiding

Since The Girl Guides Association was first formed in 1910 it has continued to grow until today when there are somewhere in the region of 10 million members throughout the world. Many packs have waiting lists which underlines the continuing popularity of the movement. 

To keep itself relevant Guiding has continued to modernize itself over the decades, although there are still a number of features that are probably still recognizable from the early years. 

One of the big attractions of guiding is that it helps girls to make new friends. Many of these friendships endure and last a lifetime. There is also an annual camp or pack holiday. This gives girls the opportunity to experience time away from their home and parents while still feeling that they are in secure surroundings. 

Brownies and Guides can also work towards gaining badges. These are awarded for a wide variety of achievements. The fact that the achievements are so varied means there are badges that can be won by girls with different strength and skills. 

Guides and Brownies meet once a week, normally in school term times. As well as playing games and carrying out various fun activities there is also an element of learning involved. For example their may be visit from the local fire service to talk about home safety.
