How I Knew My Grandfather Loved Me
My whole family is Irish. I remember my grandpa coming over from Ireland as a child, visiting us with presents and enthralling us with talk of the “little people†and banshees. He would bring us chocolate covered coins and say they came from the little people themselves as a welcome and an invitation for me to visit them in their beautiful land by the sea. I grew up wanting to live in Ireland amongst the little people, to face and defeat the dreaded banshee, and to protect the land I learned to love. Of course, it wasn’t until I was in my twenties that I discovered gold coins were sold in the local super market. They were just candy and nothing more, but I will treasure them anyway. I guess it wasn’t really about the “little people;” it was about my grandfather and how much he treasured me.
