Use the vacation as a teaching tool
I was reading about Southern Illinois tourism in a magazine and they were using that as a catch to help parents with their kids. I started thinking about it and it made sense. If you are dealing with tourism that basically means you are on vacation and when is a better time to teach your kids than when they lease expect it. You can do the obvious thing and go to historic sights or you can use your imagination. One thing mentioned was to allow your kids to bring their friends and as they get older they can bring their boyfriends or girlfriends. There needs to be some supervision, of course but that is a wonderful way to see how your child treats the opposite sex. No child would ever invite mom or dad on their date, but this works much the same way. After a little observation you can gently instruct your child on the way things ought to work. It sure beats the “Birds and Bees†conservations. Another good teaching tool can be the games you play in the car or at the lodge during the down times. The license plate game can teach a lot about geography, depending on the rule you add on.
